Having your own personal website

So you are wanting to have your own website but you do not know anything about making a website.  What do you do?  Here is a quick guide for those who know absolutely nothing about setting up your own website and are not technically inclined.

  1. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT sign up for any web hosting plan. You can sign up for a domain name (which generally costs 10 bucks a year) but do not sign up for a hosting plan.  Details on why will be explained at a later post.
  2. Research.  Research a lot.  Google is your friend.  Know yourself.  What is it that you want?  Do you want a website to showcase your work or do you want a website that displays information so that people know what to look for?
  3. Do you want to do this yourself or hire someone?  You can do it yourself or you can hire someone.
  4. If you plan to hire someone:
    1. Look at that person’s portfolio – if it looks like crap then don’t have them do it.
    2. Ask them about what will happen after the website is set up – do you plan to maintain it or will they?  Can you easily add stuff to it?  Will they teach you how to add to it and will it be simple enough for you to add to it.
    3. How long will it take?
    4. GET THINGS IN WRITING.  Make up a contract, write down the details on what will be done, how much, etc.  Use google to look up some contracts.
  5. If you want to do it yourself…well that’s coming up in another post.

Corrupted Jpeg files

I recently took some pictures on my camera and when I went to download them on to my macbook pro, it was corrupted.  Needless to say, I wasn’t too happy and began my search for a free program that would work on a mac.

I am happy to say that this program: PhotoRec is the best and it worked for me.  Did I mention it’s free as well?

Designer || Developer

So I came across this blog and then read this post which was listed in the comments and it got me thinking about me.  I come from both sides.  Needless to say, I went through a lot of deep reflection.  I will be making a post in the next week about me in regards to the Past (where I started), the Present (what I am currently up to), and the Future (where I plan to be).

Side note:  I think I am going to be making a page that lists my interests.

Another side note:  I think I will be make a Quickie-No-non-sense guide for those who want to make their own websites.  I’ve been interacting with people who a) need somes work on their current site b) are noobies and not very techie and wants to start their site or c) wants to make their own but doesn’t know where to begin.  This will cover from starting a website, designing, branding, and getting your name out there in the world.  I’ve been through this path and I know how it feels to be overwhelmed and scared.  The last thing you want to do is get screwed (financially).

The Five-Year Plan

In my head I have the Five-Year Plan.  Things that I want to do, things I want to buy, and where I will be.  I never really wrote things down, I just keep it in my head. I do this to remind myself of all the things that I want/need to accomplish.  Keep pursing the Thoureau idea of living the life I’ve imagined.  One good thing about this plan is that it keeps me from buying the really expensive soon.  It reminds that I will get it, not right away, but at least within 5 years.

So by 2013, I will have/do:

  • A new car – hybrid of course!
  • A Cintiq display
  • iMac
  • Travel to various countries
  • A house
  • A couple of mini-kims and mini-marks running around
  • Some dogs and cats
