Hectic Week

It’s been a very crazy week. My school had a career fair yesterday. It was…okay. I found a few companies (more like 1) that I am interested in. I am currently seeking a job (preferably on the East Coast) in either Interaction Design or User Experience Design. I’ve been doing some searches online and found a lot of positions. Unfortunately, I don’t qualify for all the things that are necessary. So, do I apply and see what happens? There is this one place in Rochester where I would like to work. I’ve submitted my portfolio and at this point all I can do is wait.

I read a lot of various web, design, and art related blogs. To see the variety of people’s work is inspiring and I wish I had more time to pursue my own work. Unfortunately, I haven’t made a Digital Art piece in over a year. I wish I had the time to make one but I don’t.

Right now the two most important things on my mind are: finish my Capstone (so that I can graduate) and find a job. From here on out it’s only going to get busier. I have a bunch of other things that I want to do.

So here’s my list of what I plan to do:

  • Finish Capstone
  • Apply to jobs
  • WordPress Tutorials/Tips/Advice
    • After making the theme for the Lab for Social Computing website, I figured it would be good to post some brief tips/advice on WordPress. I’ve spent so many hours pouring over the codex, books, websites, and other people’s themes to come up with something that would work.
  • Start uploading more pictures to Flickr
  • Get some Moo Mini-Cards
  • Enter in the Adobe Design Achievement Award
  • Take some pictures (considering I don’t have time to make artwork, taking pictures is quicker and helps maintain my creativity)
  • Get healthy and fit (thank goodness for my personal trainer!)
  • Make my own WordPress theme for this site.
  • Dissect the Sandbox theme (I am one of those people who needs to understand the code)

I can’t help but wonder if I have the skills necessary to find a job. I have all these big ideas in my head but am learning to implement them. I know that I have the desire to improve, the ability to learn quick, and am passionate about my work. I’m always learning and trying to better myself. But is it enough?

Time crunch

I’ve been busy for the past couple of weeks and I am only going to get busier. Next week there is a career fair, so I’ve been spending time working on my portfolio, revamping my resume and redesigning my website. So far, I finished redesigning my website, my portfolio – needs some minor tweaks, and my resume is only about 70% done. My goal is to have everything done today. In the midst of preparing for the career fair, I’ve been working on my capstone whenever I can. I’m still a week behind on my timeline.

I tired!

Lab for Social Computing

Last Spring in one of my classes, my group’s design for the Lab for Social Computing website was selected to be implemented. During the winter quarter, I spent time implementing the website using WordPress as a CMS.

Can I just say “Yowser!”

WordPress is great but has it’s own little kinks and such especially for the website that I was building.

Here is the original design.  (link no longer works)

Here is the wordpress version.

The only great thing is that I’ve learned a lot more on the inner workings of developing themes. Thanks to Eric Hui (my groupmate who originally made did the CSS) for being able to help out with the CSS.

All that is left now, is to add content, put in some comments, and make a readme file.

Macbook Pro

I received my Macbook Pro yesterday via FedEx. I seriously didn’t think it would come because when I checked the previous day before, it said it was still in Shanghai, China. However, I checked yesterday morning and it said it would be here later that day.

The FedEx delivery lady came and I was happy (arrived around noon)! I hugged the box and then proceeded to go and workout. In the words of my friend Andrew – “Worst Nerd EVAR!”. I got home, took a shower, ate and have yet to open the box.

My fiancee came home (around 4 pm) and I spent some time with him. He was like “Hunny! Open the box!”. And I replied “No! I am spending time with you!”.

My fiancee’s mom said “I’m surprised at how much control you have.”

As my fiancee was about to leave (it is now 5pm ish) I finally opened the box. Mind you, I did not turn on the computer yet.

At around 6pm ish, I finally turned on my Macbook Pro. Later that night, I went over to my friend’s house who helped me get set up and showed me some tips and tricks.

In the words of my friend, “You are now a Mac User.”

I AM SO FRICKIN EXCITED! WOOT!

Off to the gym…
